Why these thresholds exist — and why they hurt
Parcel networks are built for conveyor-belt packages. Anything long, bulky or heavy has to be handled by people instead of belts, so carriers price it punitively: the surcharge often costs more than the base shipping, and it stacks with residential and fuel fees. The January 2026 change added cubic-volume triggers — 10,368 in³ for Additional Handling, 17,280 in³ for Large Package — which pulled thousands of previously ordinary items, like guitar cases, bike boxes and floor lamps, into surcharge territory.
